My Skincare Journey

I feel like I haven't taken much time to talk about me on this blog. It is important for each of you to know who I am and my reasoning for sharing information with all of you.

We all Gotta Start Somewhere

Growing up I loved anything and everything having to do with make and could not wait until I could wear makeup all the time. When I was in high school, I started experimenting with makeup and when I got to college I basically had a makeup routine. As I started to wear makeup more often I noticed my skin was looking different, I was not sure why but I wanted to fix it.

A long time passed and I didn't do anything. Since I did not have acne, I didn't think I should have a skincare routine or anything like that. Fast forward to a couple of months ago, when my sister in law started talking about her skin care routine. She told me all about it, so I decided I wanted to have beautiful skin like she did.

The First Steps

A couple of months ago I started paying more attention to the products I was using on my face. I noticed that before I just used random products that "looked pretty." I quickly learned that "pretty" doesn't always mean good. I decided to start by asking my sister-in-law what I could use that is good and affordable.

My whole life I thought there was no skin type for my face. I felt like I had dry skin because my foundation looked flakey but I also had a shiny face all the time, then my face would get so red so I figured I had sensitive face. I was convinced there were no products made for my face since it was all the skin types in one.

What Skin Type Do I have?

As many of you can imagine, I turned to the internet to find more about skin types. Of course, everyone's skin is different so there is no perfect recipe but skin types help.  At first it was a little discouraging to learn from beauty gurus, because their skin is already flawless. I felt like they were not being honest with me. I decided to focus on where I was getting my information from. I started to pay more attention to websites and where their resources were coming from. Finding more about what type of skin I had helped me have a starting point. I learned that my skin leaned more towards combination skin. Those guidelines helped know what ingredients or types of make up I needed.

Be Willing to Spend a Little more than a Few Dollars

If any of you know me, you know I am cheap. I hate spending money that doesn't need to be spent. The first thing that came to mind when I started learning about the skincare products, was EXPENSIVE. Since I tend to be cheap, I started using the cheap products. I noticed with cheap cleaners, my face felt so dry like car-board. Then, cheap moisturizers which I had to apply about 3 times before I felt my skin nice and moisturized. I decided to give the more expensive products a try, and by more expensive ones I do not mean most expensive. I learned that the cheaper products have bad ingredients in them, so I had to be willing to pay a higher price for better ingredients.

Be Patient

I had the idea that as soon as I used the product I would see obvious results, but I was wrong. The reality is that skin needs time, if dehydrated then it needs time to rehydrate. If there are blemishes, it needs time to restore. There will also be a lot of product testing. I went through about 4 different face cleansers before I found one that I love. Different brands have different ingredients that could be good but also bad for your skin so taking time to test things out is part of the process. Results depend on the skin and the type of kind conditions we are dealing with.

Learn to Love Your Skin

One of the hardest part of this whole journey is learning to love your skin. My skin is 100% not perfect, but I am learning to love it. I feel that as I learned to love my skin, I find ways to take better care of it. I have been able to see results, although they are not huge. I know there are some people that suffer from acne or other skin conditions that can be hard to deal with, but learning to accept yourself is key for skincare. I started remembering more often that skincare is not only superficial, but it also has to do with feeling good and taking care of myself. You should do the same, take time to look at your skin and love it. When you do that, skincare will become a way to show love to yourself.
